Welcome!

Care for the Caregiver was created and developed by Annette Cannon, PhD, MA, RN.  She began this ‘grassroots movement’ to support it’s campaign: ‘100 Nurses’.  This is a natural and spontaneous process driven by the current nursing shortage.  It is beginning on the local level and has community volunteers that will give their time and support to help reach this goal. The expected outcome is a significant increase in the Colorado Nursing Workforce and improved quality of healthcare.

Dr. Cannon had organized many fundraisers and benefits in the past to help those who help others.  She raised funds for the ‘Nurses in Crisis during Katrina’, providing them with much needed mental health relief.  Addressing the nations’ nursing shortage, she also raised funds for Hispanic women, enrolled in Certified Nursing Assistant school, who were Medicaid recipients with disabled children at home and for scholarships to High School students wanting to go to Nursing school. She has also organized and sponsored a movement to provide Scholarships to those nurses who are “already licensed as RNs”, but have been on inactive status and will require a ‘nurse refresher course’ to get back into our workforce.  This will put an educated, experienced, licensed RN back to work. We need to use the resources we have!

Uniquely, the theme for all of Care for the Caregiver’s fundraisers is Music.  Through music, we are working to bring people together who share a common concern about the nursing shortage and the quality of healthcare in this nation.  The shortage of registered nurses (RNs) within this country could reach numbers of 500,000 by the year 2025. The demand is growing yearly, especially as our population ages. There is a shortage of nursing instructors and clinical scholars to teach and guide the new nurses.

Currently, she is raising money to help those nurses who lost their homes in the 2008 Midwest Floods. There is a huge benefit / fundraiser planned for September 20, 2008 at Sweetwater Station, 100th and Wadsworth.  Live Music, Food and Prizes. Plan to attend.

We are seeking organizations to sign on and be aligned with Care for the Caregiver. Our members will help bring about an awareness of the importance of having a means to care for those who help others.  I welcome everyone who cares about the future of nursing and quality of our healthcare, to get involved.

Thank you,

Annette Cannon
